The Leading Dilemma

Leadership is that thing that everyone wants, but not everyone truly understands. And in doing so, most people do struggle to lead well. Jesus had it right when He told the disciples in Matthew 20:26-27 “26 But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. 28 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” This idea is a hard one to grasp in that many people tend to lead according to how they have been led, instead of leading the way they WANT to be led. This struggle develops because many times as leaders we are being led by people who do not necessarily hold the same values to the same standard that we do. This DOES NOT mean that we have the right to belligerently disagree but this does give us the opportunity to put into effect the teaching of Christ above. If in the course of life you find yourself in a situation with a boss or teacher or pastor or anyone in authority who you believe to be faulty in their leadership, it is our responsibility (if you find it worth fighting for) to lead by example. This means that we must first become what we want that person to embody. Only through our consistency in displaying the desired leadership qualities will we be able to successfully help those in authority over us to attain what we believe to be the desired outcome.

This idea comes from the golden rule: Do to others what you would want them to do to you. Leadership is no different except that in order to become what you desire you must first be willing to give up everything for what you believe in most. Jesus himself even said that He came to serve and not to be served. So if we as his followers are striving to be like him, why would we expect anything different? The simple answer is you can’t. Simple however does not mean easy. Its a difficult thing to lead from behind, especially when it seems like evil people continue to prosper and become more evil the more you strive to set the example. However, do not give up. When the time is right, you will be rewarded for all your efforts and God will elevate to the place your heart longs to be!

Keep on fighting!
